Delta Police Chief Robert Thomas said the full report is being reviewed by the 7th Judicial District Attorney’s office, and he can’t release any details before they do.
Three officers were involved in the shooting just after midnight that Friday night. They had gone to the 600 block of Grand Avenue in Delta after a 1:14 a.m. report of gunshots in the area.
When they arrived, they spotted Brown in the street holding a handgun. He then “turned the weapon on the officers and started firing,” Thomas said.
The officers fired back, and Brown died of multiple gunshot wounds. None of the officers was injured.
The three officers, who have not yet been identified for their own safety, Thomas said, were immediately put on administrative leave after the shooting. The three have been back at work at the police department for a couple of weeks, but working desk jobs and not going out on patrol, he said.
Thomas is glad the investigation is over and looks forward to the case being resolved.
But that won’t bring back Brown, who Thomas called “a good man,” and whose family is anxious for more details about what happened.
“I do know the details regarding the case but I can’t reveal that information,” he said. “It’s been given to the DA for review and they will be the ones to determine whether it was justified or unjustified.”
Thomas has been communicating with Brown’s wife and family through emails and the department’s victim’s advocate has met with them, but they are still frustrated because the case has taken a long time and there hasn’t been more information, he said.
“I understand their sense of frustration,” he said. “It’s a hard place for everybody and whenever there’s a loss of life, it’s tragic. Mr. Brown, I understand, was a very good person, but I understand that he also had some issues.”
The shooting was investigated by the Seventh Judicial Officer Involved Shooting Team and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
