It has become one of the urgent questions asked prior to each Telluride Film Festival: What will Serge Bromberg do this year? Festivals past have seen Serge, with Leonard Maltin as trusty assistant, set a highly flammable piece of old nitrate film ablaze on the Opera House stage; unearth shockingly gorgeous footage from the greatest thriller never made (that would be Henri-Georges Clouzot’s Inferno); and premiere the color version of Georges Melies’ A Trip to the Moon, the birth of the science-fiction epic and the largest restoration in history. He’s played piano to accompany strange and wonderful silent films (some discovered in attics and flea markets), told stories and reminded us that cinema can be a performance art. So what does Serge have planned? We can count on a lost and now restored Charlie Chaplin, a Disney you’ve never seen and other rarities. And, of course, Serge himself, one of cinema’s treasures.
