On a recent Monday lunch hour at 520 Burger Restaurant and Bar, located in the heart of Ridgway, patrons from all walks of life were uniformly happy. 

A couple road tripping through the mountains on a motorcycle found the lunch they craved in a Philly cheesesteak sandwich and a salad. A group of high school gals, still wet after a dip into the nearby Uncompahgre River, chatted over plates of sandwiches and fries. A middle-aged couple enjoyed freshly poured beers on the restaurant’s large patio, taking in the splendor of the surrounding scenery. For a Monday, perhaps the slowest day of the week for many restaurants, 520 Burger had a bustling lunchtime.

With a name like 520 Burger, you’d expect to find a better-than-average burger, if not a great burger. Simply put, 520 Burger doesn’t disappoint. There are ten burger varieties, priced between $9-11, to choose from. There’s the ranch burger topped with bacon, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, ranch dressing and choice of cheese. The grilled onion burger comes with bacon, grilled on onions and cheese. A classic patty melt made with Swiss cheese, grilled onions on toasted rye is available. Like a touch of spice? Go with the green chili burger, topped with actual strips of roasted green chilies and cheese.

The restaurant’s namesake burger is topped with all the usuals, including bacon, and also comes a red sweet pepper relish that makes for a unique, special sauce all its own.

If beef isn’t what you like to see between two buns, you can substitute chicken breast or veggies at no extra cost. For an extra $2, you can go with buffalo or elk.

Once you’ve made the hard decision as to what burger you’re  looking for, the next decision is about what sides to settle on. Choose from fries, coleslaw, a pile of potato salad, a side salad, cottage cheese and sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries came highly recommended, and Torie and I were glad for the advice. They were crispy, slightly sweet and had a nice dusting of coarse salt. It was sweet and salty at its best.

The Philly sandwich ($11.50), made with either prime rib or sliced chicken, is topped with grilled onions, American cheese and served on a hoagie roll. 520 Burger’s version of this sandwich contains just the right balance of bread, cheese and meat. It’s a simple concept, yet many get it wrong.

The turkey green chili Philly ($11.50) contains all the qualities of the regular Philly, but comes with green chilies, jalapenos, cheddar and mozzarella cheese. Other sandwich options include a Reuben ($10.50) with your choice of pastrami or corned beef, and a BLT ($10.50).

520 Burger does salads as well. 

Torie, who was less hungry than I was, settled on a Cobb salad. It had all the right elements; beautifully displayed, it was a  hit. Being more on the hungry side, I started off with an order of crispy chicken wings ($8). I went with a classic Buffalo sauce but could have gone with a Thai, barbecue, or a jalapeno citrus glaze. The menu states that the wings are crispy. Once again, we weren’t disappointed. The wings were big and very, very crispy.

Besides great burgers, salads and sandwiches, 520 Burger does breakfast, starting at 7 a.m. The banana foster French toast ($9.50), made with bananas, cream cheese and sauce, came highly recommended by one regular; his wife suggested the eggs benedict ($10.50). Other classic breakfast items include a breakfast burrito ($7.50) and corned beef hash ($9.50).  

520 Burger keeps its menu simple, yet it seems to have something to satisfy everyone. If you are somewhat indecisive, go with a burger. 

After all, it is a burger joint and a very good burger joint at that.

VIBE: Come as you are. Both inside and outside, 520 Burger is warm, inviting and relaxed.

GRAB A DRINK: 520 Burger has a full bar. Sip a specialty 520 house margarita, a house bloody Mary or one of many fresh beers on hand.

I couldn't agree more with the review of 520 Burgers. I was traveling in the area in June and ate there 4 times. I can't wait to get back for the Philly and the breakfast scramble. 520 does it right! I wouldn't expect anything less from a N.Y. CIA grad as head chef!! Superb!
