I am only one of many Republicans and former Republicans who support Barack Obama for President. It’s not hard to see why, considering the eight years of George W. Bush and ten out of 12 years of Republican-controlled congresses. The party that theoretically prizes smaller government, more individual personal freedoms and fiscal responsibility has been hijacked by neoconservatives delivering exactly the opposite. During that period we have seen the largest growth of government in U.S. history, highest national debt, a very badly conceived and prosecuted war, and an incredible national financial disaster. Sadly also, solutions to other critical issues such as energy independence, healthcare costs and availability, Middle East stability and the degenerating American role in world leadership have not been advanced in the slightest degree.

As much as Senator McCain would like to, he can’t separate himself from the past 12 years, since he has been in Congress for the last 28 years and supported virtually all of Bush’s policies. Consider also that his voter base continues to be the most extreme of the Republican party. McCain’s pick of Sarah Palin is only one decision clearly showing his inclination to the more extreme right. Also, McCain has displayed a consistent lack of substantial support for energy independence, healthcare reform, global warming and education reform.

Barack Obama on the other hand has consistently outlined pragmatic and realistic programs to deal with these important issues, all with an eye toward fiscal responsibility. He has displayed sound judgment from his courageous and up-front opposition to the Iraq war to the financial rescue plan and everything in between. Barack Obama has the intelligence, judgment, steady calm, and integrity to put America back on the right track. Colin Powell thinks Barack Obama will be a “transformational” and “exceptional” President, and that is exactly what America needs at this time.

This year, Colorado has the longest ballot in the country, and may take as long as 30 minutes per voter. It is very important that everyone possible take advantage of early voting or mail-in ballots. You will not only be doing yourself a favor, but enfranchising others on Election Day who may not be able to wait in line. Please call the county clerk for more information at 970/728-3954.
