NORWOOD – Norwood’s Wright Stuff Community Foundation presents its Third Annual Wright Stuff Challenge, a 5k/10k race for walkers and runners, on Saturday, June 25, on the county roads south of town.

It is the foundation’s major annual fundraiser, with proceeds going directly toward programs for youth living in Norwood, Nucla, Naturita, Redvale and surrounding communities.

“The Wright Stuff Challenge is one of the most fun running races I’ve done,” says Jill Burchmore, program manager for Bright Futures for Early Childhood and Families. “It has a really nice ‘home-town’ atmosphere to it.  I love how the course meanders through the back roads and neighborhoods of Norwood.  It gives it a country feel.  It is a smaller race and while it’s an out and back course, this makes it super fun because you get to say hi to all your friends as you pass each other on the turn around.  It’s very well organized and offers great prizes!”

Established in 1998, the nonprofit Wright Stuff Community Foundation provides early learning programs for children age six months to six years through its Prime Time Early Learning Center. A demonstration site for Pyramid Plus, The Colorado Center for Social Emotional Competence and Inclusion, Prime Time offers a high quality learning experience from qualified instructors who receive coaching from certified coaches. Before- and after-school care is also available for school-age kids, kindergarten through age 12, as well as the Explore! summer program, providing day camps that focus on outdoor activities, art, theatre, and more.

For adults, The Wright Stuff is home to San Miguel and West Montrose Counties Adult Education classes, which provide free evening GED classes. And the Wright’s Mesa Center also houses the Charlie Fowler Memorial Climbing wall, open to public at least one evening a week and used daily by area youth.

All proceeds from the annual 5k/10k Challenge benefit the Wright Stuff Foundation. It’s an out-and-back race, 3.2 or 6.4 miles, starting and ending at the “Pig Palace” at the San Miguel County Fairgrounds – also the site for the Norwood Farm and Craft Market, which runs until 1 p.m.

Race-day registration takes place from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m., and the race starts at 8:30 a.m. sharp. Participants are encouraged to register before June 18 for a $5 discount; fees are $30 before June 18 or $35 after. Teams of four or more people may register as a group for $25 per person.

Prizes will be awarded to the first male and female 10k and 5k runners across the finish line, as well as the first youth 10k and 5k finishers. New this year is a team spirit award, providing gift certificates for pizza and beverages at Norwood’s West End Pizzeria for the team who shows the most spirit during the race. The first 100 race participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

Registration is available at or by contacting the Wright Stuff, 970/327-0555, ext. 11 or Major sponsors for this year’s event are Alpine Bank, Telluride Alpine Lodging, Grand Avenue Auto Parts (Car Quest), Uncompahgre Medical Center, The Coach’s Mother, and Race ID.
