Have any of you ever wondered what happened to all the Bluegrass festivarian vehicles that used to park on the Valley Floor? For the past several years, they have been parking on the side of the roads in Mountain Village – thousands of them. The Mountain Village government originally agreed to become the Bluegrass Festival parking lot, hoping that the festivarians parking their cars here would also spend some money here, helping our local merchants in the process. Unfortunately, the reality is that most festivarians, again, thousands of them, just hop the gondola and head straight for Telluride Town Park. As a result, our local taxpayers have begun to question the value of the congestion, the hazards to safety, and the greatly increased load on the gondola that these vehicles present. Most Mountain Village residents have concluded that it is easier and faster to drive to Telluride and park there instead of parking in their own town and riding their own gondola. (Remember, it’s a free ride, but it costs Mountain Village taxpayers $1.50 per rider.) We seem to be a little upside down here!
For years, we’ve suggested to the folks at Planet Bluegrass that if they want to keep parking up here, we need to see more financial return. I am, therefore, delighted to announce that there will be a FREE BLUEGRASS CONCERT – FirstGrass – in Mountain Village from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday June 17 in Sunset Plaza. On behalf of the people of Mountain Village, I invite all of our neighbors and visitors up for an afternoon of great music with The Lovell Sisters and The Greencards. Later that night, Yonder Mountain String Band will be playing to a sold-out crowd at the Telluride Conference Center in Mountain Village. Bring your family. Bring your friends. Bring your Hula Hoops and dancing shoes. And please, bring your wallets and show some love for our struggling local merchants!
