SAN MIGUEL COUNTY – With their commanding 18-6 and 16-3 records, respectively, the Telluride Miners and Norwood Mavericks will offer strong Western Slope representation at this weekend’s State Volleyball Tournament in Denver.

1A division leader Norwood heads to the tournament with high hopes, after making the State Tournament trip for the last two years. Ranked number six in the 12-team pool, the Lady Mavs will only have to up-end #10-ranked Kit Carson and #3-seeded Otis to win a berth into the semifinals.

Members of the traditionally strong Norwood High School squad primed their engines with straightforward wins at their home-hosted Regional tournament last weekend, emerging from the fray as the clear victors with 3-0 wins over both visiting teams Vail Christian and Centennial. Neither Vail Christian nor Centennial managed to score more than 20 points in any of last Saturday’s games against powerhouse Norwood.

The middle-of-the-pack seeding for the coming weekend’s State tournament bodes well for the Mavericks, who come into the 2012 tournament as a now-seasoned State-going squad.

Telluride’s Miners, meanwhile, hopes to overcome more difficult odds as they head to the 2A tournament ranked #12. The Miners will first face off against the division’s #10-ranked team, Resurrection Christian, before going toe-to-toe with #1-seed Lutheran.

The girls hope to continue the winning streak they lengthened last weekend, after pulling out a 3-1 win over Ignacio and 3-2 victory over Meeker at the home-hosted Regional tournament Saturday.

Prior to last season, Telluride had not make an appearance at the State Tournament in a decade.

All State volleyball tournament games will be held Friday, Nov. 9 at the Denver Coliseum. Visit www.maxpreps.com for ongoing coverage of Telluride and Norwood’s progress.
