RIDGWAY – Ridgway High School drama classes are in rehearsal for the spring play, Pride and Prejudice, adapted by Jane Kendall from the novel by Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice tells the story of the always delicious, often amusing and sometimes heartbreaking romance between the witty, strong-willed Elizabeth Bennet (played by Cory Hibbard) and the handsome and aristocratic Mr. Darcy (played by Jess Weaver).
With only modest means, and no sons, Elizabeth's father, Mr. Bennet (played by Quinn Strickler) has five daughters to marry off. And was ever a mother as put upon as Mrs. Bennet (played by Louisa Clark)?
The eldest sister, Jane Bennet (played by Nicole Zaugg), falls deeply in love with the wealthy Mr. Bingley (played by Jake Stone), but it looks as if a romance is impossible between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. Mr. Darcy is a very proud young man and he is shocked by Mrs. Bennet's vulgar matchmaking! Darcy not only leaves for London but manages to take Mr. Bingley with him, leaving Jane Bennet bereft.
Meanwhile, the youngest Bennet sister, Lydia (played by Lindsay Woodruff), enraptured by the handsome Lieutenant Wickham (played by Casey Chevalier), has no idea of this soldier’s true nature. Mr. Wickham is a turn of the century “player” and quite dishonorable.
Set in the class-conscious England of the late 1700s, this enduring favorite is full of charming characters and brilliant observations about not only the customs and manners of the period, but also the problems and joys that accompany romance and relationships in all times.
Rounding out the student cast are Nikki VerStraete as Lady Lucas and Lady Catherine; Angela VerStraete as Kitty Bennet and Miss Bingley; Candace Yengst as Charlotte Lucas; Lauren Gleason as Mary Bennet; Brandon Doudt as Hill; and Jake Stone also playing Mr. Collins.
The talented technical crew includes Nathalie Blas-Meza, Autumn Brownrigg, Zane DeZeeuw, Ali Heinold, Candace Hollinbeck, Julia Nielsen, and Amelia Radovanovic. Show dates are Saturday, May 9, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, May 10, at 2 p.m., in Conder Hall at the Ridgway Elementary School. Ticket prices are $8 for adults, $5 for students and free for children of Kindergarten age and under.
