Everyone’s got a mess somewhere in their family history. But few could take it on like Sarah Polley has. The Oscar-nominated writer-director-actor is a treasure of Canada’s vibrant cinema scene who has acted in films by Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica), David Cronenberg (eXistenZ) and Doug Liman (Go). Her first feature, Away from Her, was a commercial and critical favorite. Her latest, Take this Waltz, starring Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen, is now in theaters.

In Stories, Polley has crafted a fearless and endlessly fascinating documentary built on layers of memories, visualized through vivid home-movie footage, and told from a Rashomon-like chorus of siblings and family friends. Her approach: to embrace the complexity of the narratives that live in our heads. What really happened in Sarah’s family? It’s a bit shocking, yet not that surprising at all.
