Eleven diverse galleries and studios are participating, offering refreshments, artist demos and in some cases live music and poetry readings to art fans as they wander the streets and sidewalks of Ouray on second Saturday evenings from 5-8 p.m., June through September.
“The Art Walk also allows the public a chance to peak inside the inner workings and spaces where Ouray’s artists create their works, and to discover the tools and equipment they use,” noted Lizelle Marais, who with her husband Jeff Reznikoff got the Ouray Art Walk off the ground last summer.
This year’s series is expected to draw bigger crowds from throughout the region, as organizers have obtained sponsorships from local businesses to fund a regional marketing and advertising campaign.
“Everyone is really grateful for the event, and excited it will bring people into town and really promote the arts,” Marais said. “Ouray is chock full of art. We hope this event will enhance the town’s exposure as a community of artists.”
Marais and Reznikoff, both artists themselves, own Dreamtime Gallery & Studio at 219 Seventh Avenue, one of the venues featured along the Art Walk. Their small gallery is alive with Naïve art, African batik, abstract/surreal paintings and drawings and mythic masks. During the Art Walk, they will host live music from 5-7 p.m. and a poetry reading and open mic with Beth Paulson from 7-8 p.m., at which community poets are invited to share their works.
Other participating galleries and studios include, from north to south:
Weehawken Creative Arts – 1900 Main Street (in the former BIOTA building); Ouray County’s art education center, exhibiting an assortment of regional artists (refreshments) .
Window to Yesterday – 965 Main Street; leaded stained glass studio; viewing of stained glass work in progress (refreshments).
Skol Gallery – 812 Main Street; local and regional art, sculpture, paintings, photography, glass, wood, fabric; sculptor Jeff Skoloda will host an open studio with metal and stone sculpture demonstrations; live music in the sculpture garden from 7-8 p.m. (appetizers and wine).
Ivory’s Trading Co. & Gallery – 737 Main Street; Native American rugs, baskets, pottery, jewelry, Western and cowboy art, and more.
Wildflower Colorado Room & Gallery – 731 Main Street; exhibiting Colorado and local artists; meet guest artist June Kirchner.
North Moon Gallery – 720 Main Street (new location in the Story Block building); art and jewelry.
Ouray Glassworks & Pottery – 619 Main Street; daily glassblowing demonstrations.
Painting Marmot Art Supply – offering a 10 percent discount on art supplies to all Art Walk patrons.
Silver Linings – 541 Main Street; southwestern art, pastels, acrylic, fine porcelain, handmade jewelry and more (refreshments).
Ago Gallery – 445 Main Street; fine art, sculpture, paintings, pottery, ceramics and more; featuring guest artist Romagean Personne.
