OURAY – The 2010 Ouray Oktoberfest celebration is Saturday, October 2, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Ouray Community Center Biergarten.
The family-friendly event will feature local brews, German food and entertainment by the Austrian Connection, a Bavarian-themed quartet that first played Ouray in 1993.
The band features Walter Schwarz on guitar, zither and vocals; Doris Schwarz on accordion and steirische; Julie Kuhl, guitar and vocals; and Deon Kuhl, drums, percussion and vocals. Walter, from Austria, established the Austrian Connection the year they started playing in Ouray. He has toured Europe with many different bands playing a variety of styles, from rock-and-roll to traditional German and Austrian music. He recorded two albums in Europe and has two releases with the Austrian Connection. His yodeling is one-of-a-kind, and his exciting performances always get crowds on their feet and joining in.
Doris plays an outstanding steirische, a traditional button accordion that gives the Austrian Connection their unique sound.
Julie is a crowd pleaser with her magnificent voice. Prior to joining the Austrian Connection, she played and recorded with several bands in Colorado. From rock-and-roll to yodeling, she provides the edge and glue to the band.
Last but not least, Deon has played with the Austrian Connection for 17 years, since its founding. He’s been playing the drums for 43 years and records and performs with many bands in Colorado.
The next time you get to Denver, visit Helga’s in Aurora where the Austrian Connection has been the house band for 15 years.
An abundance of great beer and German food will be available to those attending Ouray’s Oktoberfest. The beer is being provided by Colorado Boy and Ouray Brewery.
This will also be the last night to purchase Jeep Raffle tickets. The winning raffle ticket will be drawn at 9 p.m.
Adult cover charge is $10, which includes a free drinking stein. Students get in for $5, and children 12 years of age and under are free.
