For $5, participants “adopt” two balls in the race. Should someone’s pair of adopted red balls finish in first and second place, they win the $5,000 first place prize. Second-place winners (the third and fourth-place balls) collect $1,000; third-place wins $5,000.
Rotary is also sponsoring a $100,000 special drawing as part of the Red Ball Express; after the balls race down the hill, and its known which two balls are the winning combination, there will be a drawing for a $100,000 winner. Out of the pool of the numbers of balls raced, there will be two numbers randomly picked. If those two numbers are the same as the two winning ball numbers from the race, the race winner, in addition to the $5,000 first prize, will also win the $100,000 special prize.
Tickets are available prior to the race from Rotary Club members for $5 (call Judy Thompson at 970/728-5408 or Chris Binner at 970/729-1070) for tickets or information. Tickets will also be sold at the Sheridan Bar on Friday evening and in front of Lift 4 in Mountain Village over the weekend.
Over the last eight years, Telluride youth nonprofits have raised over $100,000 to support their operations through Red Ball Express, and Rotary has raised $50,000 for its scholarship and community grants programs.
