SAN MIGUEL COUNTY – The body of Matthew Thomas Busker of Grand Junction was found by a Montrose hiker on Black Bear Pass in the morning of Sunday, June 23. The hiker, who called officials at approximately 12 p.m., found the body 200 feet inside a mine shaft in Black Bear Basin. The cause of death, according to a report from the San Miguel County Sheriff's Office, "seems to be...a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

Busker, who went missing Saturday, June 15, was last seen in Ouray late that same night.

His vehicle, vehicle, a teal green 1977 International Scout with a bikini top, was found abandoned on Black Bear Pass road, about 1-1/2 miles inside San Miguel County, at about 12,000 feet altitude, near Black Bear Pass, on Monday, June 17.

Personnel from San Miguel County and San Juan County Sheriff's Offices, a Bureau of Land Management law enforcement officer and a U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer with a K9, searched the rugged, remote area on foot, motorcycle, and ATV, and with an Olathe Spray Service helicopter, with no success.

A three-day follow-up search, comprised of San Miguel County deputy sheriffs and volunteer Search and Rescue Team members using technical climbing equipment of the area in which Busker’s vehicle had been found was also unsuccessful.

Busker, 33, is survived by his father, Thomas, and mother, Linda; his sister, Melanie, and daughter Jordan.

Sunset Mesa Funeral Home is handling funeral services.

Foul play is not suspected.
