I wanted to pass on to the town of Telluride some financial information that my wife received from the library via a public request.
In an email from the library’s business office manager the savings achieved by closing Sundays was described as such: "The initial cost savings for closing on Sundays is $11,800 for wages, benefits and taxes for 13 hours (5 custodial and 8 materials mgmt.) The utilities savings is estimated at a conservative $2,000, it may be more." The amount the library is saving by closing on Sundays is about $14,000. This is far below the $100,000 figure repeated by Seth Cagin in the public meeting last Tuesday, and in the paper afterwards, when he tried to tie together staff reduction with Sunday closures.
I personally find it disgraceful that the library director in particular – and other library employees in general – are earning such high salaries while the public loses services. The same goes for the Board which has been spinning the facts when talking to the public.
