Leftover Salmon was formed in 1989, when the Salmon Heads asked members of the Left Hand String Band to fill some missing spots in their lineup.
The resulting quintet went on to pioneer its own genre, now known as Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass, characterized by a sound that’s at once fluid, loose-limbed, and simultaneously rootsy and daring, fusing improve with a dizzying combination of bluegrass, Cajun, funk, Southern rock, boogie, Caribbean, Latin, and jazz influences.
Today, Leftover Salmon boasts a legion of diehard fans, critical accolades and a reputation as one of the most exciting and engaging concert experiences around.
In August 2010, the group celebrated its two decades together by partnering with Riffactory to produce a live DVD of sold-out performances at the historic Boulder Theatre. Filmed in Boulder in HD, the DVD celebrates the band’s full-circle musical journey, which began Dec. 31, 1989, when The Salmon Heads and Left Hand String Band teamed up for a New Year’s Eve show at the Eldorado Café in Crested Butte. The fact that there was a blue moon that night, and then again, two decades later, for one of the band’s 2009 shows in Crested Butte and in Boulder commemorating that auspicious debut performance, led to the title Twice in a Blue Moon.
Over the course of their two decades as a band, Leftover Salmon has played with everyone from Sam Bush to Bela Fleck, David Grisman, Jerry Douglas, Del McCoury, Peter Rowan, Pete Wernick, Col. Bruce Hampton, Oteil Burbridge, Bill Payne, Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Pete Sears, Todd Park Mohr, Tony Furtado, Theresa Anderson, along with members of the The String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic, Yonder Mountain String Band and dozens of additional artists.
