This weekend, locals can help slay the Avalanche Dragon lurking in Telluride's backcountry as the San Juan Field School continues its winter-long Avalanche Education series with two one-day clinics designed to provide community members with opportunities to brush up on their avalanche skills.

Saturday's Avalanche Refresher and Sunday's Babes in the Backcountry Avalanche Awareness and Backcountry Skills clinic are both designed to get all levels of backcountry travelers thinking about avalanche safety, especially with all the recent snowfall in the Telluride area. Saturday's course is designed for people who want to brush up on their Level I skills, and will include a workshop on avalanche awareness review, beacon and rescue techniques, terrain analysis, and snow stability evaluation. The morning will be spent in the classroom, then participants will head out to the Lizard Head backcountry to log some hands-on time in avalanche country.

Sunday's class, an all-women clinic, which will provide women with a simplified introduction to the avalanche phenomenon in a supportive all-female environment. Students at Sunday's Babes class will spend the morning in a classroom environment learning about the ways in which snowpack, terrain, and weather contribute to avalanche conditions. In the afternoon, they will venture into the field on skis or snowshoes to study the basics of terrain evaluation, snow stability analysis and avalanche rescue skills.

No prior experience in necessary for Sunday's course, but event organizer and SJFS Director Nicole Greene requests participants in Saturday's clinic have a Level I Avalanche School background.

Both classes cost $95 each, and run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. These classes are a joint venture of the San Juan Field School a local non-profit committed to providing a variety of educational experiences to our community and by the San Juan Outdoor School - Telluride's premier source for mountain adventures. The all women's clinic on Sunday is additionally sponsored by Babes in the Backcountry of Breckenridge, Colorado.

The programs of the San Juan Field School would not be possible with the generous support of the Telluride Ski and Golf Company, CASE, the Town of Mountain Village, Telluride Mountain Village Metropolitan District, San Miguel County and the Telluride Foundation.
