OURAY – It’s going to be full summer of fun in Ouray … and what better way to start the season off at the historic Wright Opera House than with the music of John Denver on Saturday, June 11.

John Adams and his band specialize in John Denver music and perform their “Rocky Mountain High” experience at numerous Colorado venues. They will once again take the stage in Ouray after they played to an enthusiastic audience two years ago.

“We have booked a variety of music and theater for this summer and fall, working to coordinate opera house dates with the many other scheduled events in Ouray County,” Friends of the Wright Opera House Chair Dee Williams says.  “Kicking off with a John Denver tribute seemed the perfect opening for our mountain setting of summer and fall entertainment.”

Just a week later on June 17, the music of Trace Bundy will return to the opera house stage, after the artist, sometimes called “the ninja guitarist,” played to a full house in Ouray last winter.

With a full month of music lined up in Ridgway as part of it’s Concert in the Park series, the Wright Opera House will resume on July 30 with a jazz/pops concert by the popular Paonia-based North Fork Flyers, coinciding with the Ouray County Artists Association “Alpine Artists Holiday Art Show.”

The Friends of the Opera House has recently purchased the building and is currently organizing the management of the facilities prior to a planned renovation.

“Soon we will have a phone number and on-site staff and volunteers to provide a more efficient way to field requests for information,” Williams says.

A concert on Aug. 13 by Carin Mari & The Pony Express, presented by the Ouray County Performing Arts Guild in the Wright, will round out the Ridgway Rendezvous Weekend sponsored by Weehawken Creative Arts.

Cruising into the fall, the Boulder Acoustic Society will perform on Sept. 3, adding to the Labor Day Weekend festivities of the Ouray County Fair and Rodeo.  The next weekend, on Sept. 10, the Diamond D Wranglers will return to the opera house for a concert of their popular old-fashioned cowboy music.

Theater then returns to the Opera House on Sept. 23 and 24 when the Timshel Theater Company will stage Love, Loss and What I Wore by Delia and Nora Ephron, recently popular on Broadway.  Then, on Oct, 28-29, the “Hounds of Baskerville” will be presented as a live radio show by the Ouray County Players.

The traditional Rocky Horror Picture Show will again celebrate the Halloween season on Oct. 21 and 22.

Christmas season will be ushered in by The Nutcracker, performed by the Weehawken Creative Arts Dance Program on Dec. 2- 4. Ouray’s Yule Night weekend will include the “Wine and Chocolate Festival” sponsored by the Ouray Chamber Resort Association.

Advance tickets will be available at Wright Opera House Ticket Office in the Blue Pear and at the usual vendors. The complete schedule, links to most of the performers and information about the Wright Opera House are available at SaveTheWright.org. Tickets can be reserved by sending an email to SaveTheWright@ouraynet.com.
