Past columns have outlined how we got to where we are and where we’re going, but it is time to talk about the here and now. The people of our area have begun to show their generosity and support for a “place to play” in our community. We have raised just over $515,000 of the total $2.7 million we need for the initiative. Things are indeed well under way.

We expect that we will continue to gain momentum as fall approaches and thoughts turn to school. Every penny has indeed been significant. Also, two anonymous donors have each weighed in this past week with $100,000. There were some very elated funding committee members at the Wednesday night meeting.

As of this writing, many of the specific recognized donation items have not been claimed. These include: gymnasium, $1,000,000; music room, $400,000; climbing room, $250,000; weight room, $100,000; locker rooms (3), $50,000; music practice rooms (2), $25,000; announcer’s table, $15,000; main basketball hoops (1 remaining), $5,000; side basketball hoops (4), $2,500; and bleachers (44 remaining), $1,500.

So now we’re approaching the 20 percent mark for funds raised. The mercury in the thermometer in the town park is on the rise. Wow! What a great feeling and there are so many more activities planned that will not only help the fun-draising but also give us a reason to get together.

Here is a brief list of upcoming events:

Sept. 3 – Students will take part in the Labor Day Parade;

Sept. 8 – True Grit Days. Two booths will benefit the gym and music initiative, one selling hot dogs and hamburgers and the other selling True Grit movie memorabilia. (Many thanks to the folks at Cornerstone for this!)

Sept. 8 – Skateboard competition at the Ridgway Skate Park, 4-8 p.m. (Thanks to Sam Middleton for this!)

Sept. 15 – Kick-off barbecue and open house at the Secondary School, 5:30-7 p.m.

Sept. 29 – Golf tournament. (Thanks to the Divide Ranch and Club!) Times and format forthcoming.

At these events you will have a chance to learn more about the initiative, see drawings and floor plans and purchase a pink flamingo T-shirt or lawn ornament to show your support.

So there you have the facts. No pathetic prose or horrible hyperbole, just the facts. Our community is stepping up to make this happen. The students are excited about the prospect of a gym, music room and climbing wall for 2008. Please help us keep the momentum going by supporting the events and considering a contribution for a “place to play.”
