DELTA – The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests plans to conduct prescribed burns this spring to assist in managing fuel build up on Forest Service lands.
Information that GMUG will not conduct prescribed burns this spring was erroneously reported.
The GMUG has conducted “pile-burning” throughout December and January and is continuing to make plans for prescribed burns this upcoming Spring. As with all prescribed fire, a lot of time and effort are involved to develop specific parameters to accomplish natural resource goals and to provide for safety and control as part of the process.
While plans are moving forward for prescribed burning, Forest Service officials continue to monitor moisture levels and conditions to ensure that any future burns will be conducted under ideal conditions and within the established safety parameters.
“We hope to be able to accomplish some resource management through prescribed fires this Spring; however, that will all be dependent upon moisture and fuels conditions,” Forest Fire Management Officer Jaime Gamboa said. “Firefighter and public safety continue to be the highest priority on all fires and regard for human safety and management of risk, guide all fire management decisions and actions.”
