OURAY – Ouray track and field finished the year with four podiums at the state meet last weekend in Lakewood.
Ouray senior triple jumper Kaleb Sackman established a new personal record and a new school record at 43’ 8.5” on his way to second place, behind only Kyle Baker of South Park, who jumped 44’ .5”. Sackman eclipsed the school record of 43’ 6” set at the 2006 state meet by Chris Scott.
Another local triple jumper, Candace Yengst, of Ridgway, finished 8th in the girls competition at state, with her jump of 33’ 9.5”, a personal best by six inches.
Sackman added a seventh to his podium haul in the long jump, with a leap of 19’ 5”. Ouray’s Georgyn MacDougall, near the top all season in her specialty, the 100 m hurdles, also finished seventh at state. She clocked a 17.10-second run behind Limon’s Caitlyn Hubbard, who was in a class by herself, ahead of Telluride’s Lindsey Stint and Emy Ludwig in second and third, respectively.
Ouray coach Bernie Pearce noted that the boys’ 4x400 m relay team, while they didn’t qualify for the nine-team finals, did break the school record for the third time this season, with a clocking of 3:38.28. That quartet consists of Eli Holmes, Chris Cramp, Kyle Cotton and Jaxon Gaita.
