MONTROSE – Montrose tattoo artist Phil Maier will tell you the most important thing for an artist is to do his best work.
Good work means happy customers, which in turn means a loyal fan base, and that is what Maier is trying to build at his new Fancy Rooster Tattoo shop in downtown Montrose.
Maier, 27, branched out early this fall, after apprenticing for his friend, Liberty 2 Tattoo artist Greg Hines, for six years. Maier has been getting tattoos ever since he was 16, and is proud to wear short-sleeved shirts to show them off.
"I'm obviously all about it. It's what represents you, and that's what is so great," Maier said of his own tattoos. "To each their own; that’s what's is cool about it.
Fancy Rooster Tattoo is located inside an old brick and wood building at 48 South Grand Ave., where rustic earth tones, soft brick and old antique furniture create a perfect place for tattoo aficionados to get "fresh ink."
"It's great,” Maier said of the historic brick-and-wood ambiance. “It fits me.”
Customers can browse Maier’s complete collection of tattoos, or consult about everything from a particular look to a desired piece of art. They can also bring in pictures of what they want their tattoos to look like. A Prescott, Ariz. native, Maier said he chose Montrose not just for the local clientele, but because it "is a beautiful place to live.
"I'm into hunting and fishing,” he said. “I just love it here. It's a good place to raise a family." Maier and his fiancée, Rachel Sanz, are expecting their first child.
Maier works Monday through Saturday from 12-8 p.m. Saturdays are by appointment only.
Over the holiday season, Fancy Rooster will raffle off two $200 tattoos; the winners will be announced close to Christmas. Raffle tickets cost $5, and must be purchased at the shop. Gift certificates are available.
