MONTROSE – Lisa Gibson was in the hospital on Aug. 29, the night that her husband Andrew Shawn Gibson, 50, died at the Montrose County jail.
“It’s been a rough week,” Lisa Gibson said, but she is still carrying on.
According to his wishes, Gibson was cremated and a private service for family and friends was held Monday at the Royer Cabin at the foot of the Lone Cone Mountain. His cousin Sam Keeton officiated.
“The service was beautiful, but when Shawn passed away I was in the hospital with pneumonia,” Lisa Gibson said.
Gibson was found dead in the work release dormitory of the Montrose County jail last week, but according to Lisa Gibson, her husband had not been ill. The exact cause of death won’t be known for weeks until toxicology reports are analyzed, according Dr. Thomas Canfield, Montrose County coroner.
Shawn Gibson was in work release because of a recent DUI, she said, following a previous DUI two years ago. She explained that her husband had a drinking problem he’d been struggling to overcome, and he recently had a relapse.
“He had been sober for 11 months and was getting off probation when he violated it,” she said.
But even though he was in work release, he still tended to her needs.
“He came home during the day to take care of me and went back at night,” she said.
Regardless of his problems, Shawn Gibson was loved by many family and friends. Born in Montrose in 1959, he moved to Norwood as a boy and graduated from Norwood High School in 1977.
According to an obituary written by his family, Gibson was a heavy equipment operator, “but had many talents and skills that could and did earn him a living.”
Gibson had a deep love and respect for Mother Nature. He enjoyed photography, his arrowhead collection and crafts he worked on from things he found in nature. He was also a great cook and an avid Denver Broncos fan.
Gibson is survived by his wife, Lisa, of Montrose; two stepdaughters and two step granddaughters; his mother, Lavonne Royer of Norwood; his father Andrew Gibson of Tygh Valley, Ore.; stepfather Leland Bennett of Nucla; son Jesse Gibson, his wife Christine and their daughter Taylor, all of Montrose; daughter Cherish Marolf and her partner Tashina Cordova of Olathe; his grandmother, Jane Royer of Norwood; sisters Gloria Cox and husband Ed of Grand Junction, Valerie Gibson of Norwood; stepsisters Tabby Baslee of Arizona and Sherri McMickell of Utah; stepmother Zulma Gibson and half brothers and sisters Michael, Robert, Pam and Erica of Oregon.
