I would like to express my dismay at the re-appointment of Seth Cagin, by the Board of County Commissioners, to the Library Board of Trustees. I attended the most recent Board of Trustees meeting, on the 13th, and when I attempted to comment, during the public comment period, on the compensation of the Director – how her compensation along with the compensation of the HR Officer adds up to 10 percent of the 2013 library budget, and how this is not sustainable long-term – I was interrupted by board member Seth Cagin who implied that the salary of the Director is beyond discussion and that I couldn’t bring it up. (The meeting was recorded if anyone would like to hear it.) I find it improper for a member of a public board to tell a member of the public that the compensation of a public employee, which is public information, is not allowed to be discussed at a public meeting.
The Board of County Commissioners chose the wrong candidate when they re-appointed Seth Cagin to the Library Board of Trustees. He has a basic misunderstanding of the rights of citizens, and he has shown at many meetings a tendency to interrupt and dismiss members of the public during their allotted comment time and to try and control what topics they comment on. It saddens me that this person will have a hand in shaping the library for the next half-decade.
