After 9/11, the San Miguel County Department of Health and Environment organized the Pandemic Flu Task Force. Over the years, we created the Pandemic Influenza Response Plan, which is actually an annex of the San Miguel County Public Health Emergency Operations Plan (which is yet another annex of the San Miguel County Emergency Operations Plan). Overall, these plans were created to address any public health emergency.

The County Public Health Emergency Operations Plan was approved by the County Commissioners this spring. The Pandemic Flu Task Force is made up of perhaps two dozen local individuals including health care professionals, law enforcement, local and county government and citizens who act to advise our public health department. The department is overseen by June Nepsky (Certified Family Nurse Practitioner) and Public Health Officer, David B. Homer, M.D., who acts as the County Advisor and chairs the pandemic flu task force.

The most reliable source of information regarding the activities of a task force would be our county website: www.sanmiguelcounty.org.

In addition, the task force recommends two other important sources for information: www.flu.gov (a web site developed by the CDC and the Department of Health and Human Resources); also, the Colorado Public Health Hotline: 877/462-2911.

David B. Homer, M.D., San Miguel County Public Health Officer
