We would like to thank all of you who over the years have taken the time and effort to speak to us both privately and publicly about your concerns and your success stories regarding the Ridgway Schools. Your input is an integral part of our continual improvement journey. We know that many of you who spoke at the Ridgway School Board meeting on April 17 may not believe that your input was listened to. We did listen to all of your comments, and we heard your compassion. Each one of us do care about your input and the time you took to tell us how you feel.

It is difficult to understand that a governing body can take your thoughts into account and yet make a decision contrary to what you believe is best. It is easy to assume at that point that your voice “wasn’t heard.” It is harder, although critical, to try to understand that issues facing our school district are complex and difficult, and that board members must weigh so many different sources of input and information. Unfortunately, one night of heartfelt remarks does not constitute the whole story.

We would especially like to thank the students who spoke or wrote letters to us to convey their thoughts. It takes courage to speak for what you believe in, and we commend you on your courage. We also thank all the students who have spoken privately to us for your contributions as well.

Whether or not you agree with the decisions that we make, please know that the members of the Ridgway Board of Education always act out of what we believe is in the best interest of the students of Ridgway Schools. We know, as well, that each of you acts out of that same interest for students. If we all work from the position that we are each doing our best and have the best interest of our children in mind, then we can disagree on individual decisions, and still travel together on our journey toward the best possible schools for our kids.
