The RTCC requires the creation of transit advisory councils in each participating county, to provide a broad spectrum of participants for the exploration of key issues, transit planning and priorities.
To facilitate the effort, being administered by the Region 10 League for Economic Assistance and Planning, San Miguel County Commissioners have created a local transit advisory committee, the Transit Advisory Council. It will consist of at least five members, initially appointed to terms of varying lengths, who will eventually serve three-year terms.
“I think everybody agrees that this is a top priority for our community, our economy and our environment,” says San Miguel County Commissioner Joan May. “Transit is the hardest thing to tackle, with the best chance of success.
“This is something we have talked about for years,” Commissioner Elaine Fischer said. “Our population needs better access, and this advisory council should help us look at the process comprehensively – for the first time we are making headway, working with other counties to see how we can best move people around under difficult circumstances.”
It’s about time, noted Commissioner Art Goodtimes.
“At least we are finally getting something done,” Goodtimes said. “It’s time we started working and cooperating, and taking a comprehensive look at transit all over the Western Slope.”
