RIDGWAY – Adding to the Uncompahgre Valley’s reputation for world-class hot water attractions, the Chipeta Solar Springs Resort will get a little hotter and greener this December with the opening to the public of its 30,000-gallon outdoor swimming pool and its new 20-person soaking pool – the first pools in Southwest Colorado to have 100 percent solar heating capability.
For years, guests at the Chipeta Sun Lodge have enjoyed its on-site spa, which features, therapy, aromatherapy, facials, and yoga classes. Combined with its complete fitness center, the newly renamed resort is a place for the health-conscious traveler. And now with its large outdoor pool heated to 100 degrees and its soaking pool set at 104 degrees, thanks to newly installed solar heating panels, the resort will truly have it all to reinvigorate the body and mind. A grand opening is set for Dec. 1, for the public to feel the new warmth at the Chipeta.
“We are tying in with all the other hot water attractions here in the valley,” Chipeta Manager Roger Gardner says. “This will be the first winter that will have our main pool open, and we just built a new 20-person soaking pool.”
To enhance the experience, the thermal pools at the Chipeta have been converted to light salt water, eliminating harsh chlorine odors while adding a healthy soft touch to the skin. To complement the solar hot pools, there are also two large public soaking tubs, as well as 10 private balcony hot tubs for lodging guests. The thermal pools and soaking tubs will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily all winter.
When the snow melts next spring, the Chipeta will go even further to attract the soaking public, as it plans to drill geothermal wells to use the hot springs water below the resort property.
“The valley has a large number of hot springs and we want to enter that hot-water arena,” Gardner says. “We were trying to drill those wells this fall but we ran out of time. We plan to tap into those hot springs and bring them to the property for our guests to enjoy.”
The Chipeta Solar Springs Lodge has 25 Southwest style, boutique hotel rooms and condos, which provide attractive accommodations for overnight guests enjoying the new thermal waters pools, hot soaking tubs, spa and wellness facilities. The Chipeta’s atrium is an indoor botanical garden, and its Great Room, Kiva Room and Fireplace Rooms provide cozy areas for conversation with a cup of coffee, a glass of wine or just relaxing with friends and family. A poolside café, which will serve juices, smoothies, espresso, wine and light snacks will be available during business hours as well.
To celebrate the grand opening of the new solar thermal water pools, the Chipeta will be offering special lodging and spa packages this winter. Daily passes as well as individual and family pool and spa memberships will be available, so that residents of Telluride, Ouray, Ridgway and Montrose will be able to enjoy the thermal pools, poolside cafe and spa.
