Community Flu Clinic Friday, Oct. 19; Free Tdap Vaccine
MONTROSE – Montrose County Health and Human Services hosts a Community Flu Clinic, Friday, Oct. 19, 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at 1845 S. Townsend Ave.
Free Tdap vaccines will be available during the clinic, part of a statewide campaign to stop the spread of pertussis, also known as whooping cough.
This year's flu vaccination protects against three strains of influenza: two new strains, H3N2 and a B virus, and the same strain of H1N1 in last year's vaccine. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the seasonal flu vaccination for those six months and older.
The injectable vaccine costs $25; flu mist costs $30 and a high-dose vaccine costs $35, when paid at time of service. Insurance companies that can be billed include Rocky Mountain Health Plans, CNIC, ANTHEM, United, EBMS, CHP+, Medicaid and Medicare. Residents must present insurance cards at the time of service or pay cash, check or debit.

Reserve a Table at Ouray Library Luncheon and Fashion Show
OURAY – With just about a month to go, only nine reserved tables are still available for the 2012 Friends of the Ouray Library Christmas Carol Luncheon and Fashion Show.
“Reservations for this popular annual event are filling up fast,” said event organizer Barb Morss. “We’re expecting a full house this year, so now is the time to book your table.”
All of the proceeds from this event are donated to the Ouray Public Library and go directly toward improving the library’s collections. The Friends of the Ouray Library’s donation accounts for a significant portion of the library’s book budget each year.

MMHI Board Members Elected
MONTROSE – Montrose Memorial Hospital Inc. held its annual meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 9, and elected board members and the executive committee. The nominating committee for MMHI, consisting of community members, physicians and hospital staff members, received ten applications for three open board seats. Nine candidates were interviewed and five applications were recommended to the MMHI board, however one person withdrew prior to the elections. The three board candidates chosen were Tricia Dickinson, Debra Harmon and William Bennett.
The full board elected Debra Harmon as chairperson; Robb Ruyle as vice chair; and Dr. Lou Winkler as secretary/treasurer.

HPP OFFERS HABITAT IMPROVEMENT GRANTS
GRAND JUNCTION – Colorado Parks and Wildlife Habitat Partnership Program is now accepting applications from any agency, entity organization or individual interested in receiving financial assistance for large-scale habitat improvements projects.
The Colorado General Assembly and the Colorado Wildlife Commission established the Habitat Partnership Program in 1990 as a creative way to reduce conflicts between wildlife and agricultural operators by facilitating and encouraging cooperation between landowners, land managers, sportsmen and Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
HPP is offering up to $500,000 for this grant opportunity with $100,000 being the minimum awarded for large-scale habitat improvements including shrub/tree cutting, water developments, weed control and reseeding. When completed, the projects will reduce conflicts and improve habitat and range conditions.
“This program works,” said Pat Tucker, HPP coordinator for Colorado Parks and Wildlife. “Through HPP, we can see how a successful, working partnership between our agency and other stakeholders improves communication and effectively reduces game damage claims and conflicts.”
The HPP State Council will evaluate each application using various criteria, including the size and scale of treatments and the type of improvements proposed. One critical component the council will use to evaluate applicants is the extent of the recipient's partnerships that can be used to leverage limited funds and increase total project accomplishments.
Anyone interested should submit an application by February 1, 2013. Applications should number 12 copies and include all pertinent information necessary for the State Council to understand the project.
Work on approved projects can begin July 1, 2013, and must be completed by June 30, 2014. Extensions will not be granted.

Changes in the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program
SAN MIGUEL/OURAY COUNTIES – There has been a change this season in the administration of the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program providing assistance to eligible households in San Miguel and Ouray counties with paying a portion of winter home heating costs.
The program is now administered by Discover Goodwill of Southern and Western Colorado. Previous LEAP recipients will receive their application in the mail with a return envelope that will be forwarded to the Goodwill office for processing.

Ouray a Finalist in the 'Prettiest Painted Places' Competition
OURAY - The search for the “Prettiest Painted Places in America” is narrowing, with 10 finalists from the U.S. Southwest named by the Paint Quality Institute, an informational entity whose mission is to educate the public about quality paints and coatings.
The 10 finalists are Ouray, Crested Butte and Lake City, in Colorado; Manhattan Beach, Petaluma and Redlands, in California; Midway and Historic Park City, in Utah; and Prescott and Tubac, in Arizona.
After further evaluation, two of the 10 will be named the prettiest painted places in the Southwest, alongside winners from five other regions of the U.S., to make up the 12 prettiest painted places in America.
