SAN MIGUEL COUNTY – The body of 54-year-old Jonathon Keith Kelly, a Grand Junction resident, was found yesterday in western San Miguel County, following a search effort involving members of the County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Forest Service.
Kelly was found, approximately 20 miles west of the Basin Store, in a remote area off U29 road characterized by large cliff faces and extremely rocky terrain, by his brother, who had been searching the area on his own.
Without his dedicated search efforts, it is unlikely the body would have ever been found, as he had concealed himself, wedged between a cliff wall and boulder, beneath an overhang. According to San Miguel County Coroner, Emil Sante, “Both the manner and cause of death are pending and additional investigation to confirm identity is underway…Mr. Kelley is survived by his brothers Tim, Mike, George and Kevin Kelley, his sister Joscelyn Starr and his mother Georgia Kelley who live in Texas and Oklahoma.
Sunset Mesa Home will be handling the funeral arrangements.” The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the USFS, BLM, San Miguel County Coroner’s Office and Olathe Spray Helicopter (pilot Devin Felix), and especially family members, for assistance in the search.
