Features Youth Skills Program

MONTROSE – A true angler knows there is no fishing off season, but even the hardiest of fly fishers can’t help but get reenergized by the spring thaw. And in perfect timing with the promise of warmer temperatures the annual Black Canyon Fly Fishing Show, hosted by the Black Canyon Anglers, comes to the Montrose Pavilion on Saturday, March 14.

The show runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by a banquet and presentation at 5:30 p.m.

This year’s show will feature a free program for youth ages 6-16. Five educational stations will be set up that demonstrate fly fishing skills and then let the youth practice those skills. The first station will cover the basic knots used by fly fishers. The second station will have experienced youth fly tiers demonstrating how to tie a fly and then assisting the participants while they tie their own fly. Participants get to keep any flies they tie.

The third station will cover entomology and will have illustrations and actual samples of the bugs trout eat. The fourth station will have adult fly casters demonstrating the art of casting. After watching the adults, the participants will get to cast and practice for the final station, which is a casting competition where the winners will get valuable prizes, such as a guided fishing trip to Sunshine Springs Fishing Club; a complete fly fishing outfit with rod, reel and line; or a baseball hat with the Gunnison Gorge Anglers Logo.

In addition, all participants will be registered for free raffle prizes such as baseball hats, T-shirts and complete fly fishing outfits.

After the youth program, the young adults can join their parents in the other free attractions featured at the show, during which more than 40 expert adult fly tiers and two expert youth fly tiers will be tying their favorite patterns and demonstrating their special skills.

There will also be hourly seminars that cover subjects from fishing the Arkansas River to the entomology of aquatic trout food. Numerous booths will display the latest equipment and educational booths will be staffed by the Division of Wildlife and the Bureau of Land Management.

Jeff Hatton will have his fantastic bamboo fly rod display and will be on hand to evaluate the value of your bamboo fly rod. There will also be fly casting demonstrations and opportunity for guests to cast some of the new fly rods.

A Culligan Reverse Osmosis Water Purification System, complete with installation, will be given away free, and raffle tickets will be sold throughout the day for great prizes including a bamboo fly rod and a 42 inch LCD screen TV. The raffle tickets are $5 for the fly rod and $3 for the TV.

A banquet and presentation on local Gunnison Gorge Anglers projects and accomplishments of the last 25 years will begin at 5:30 p.m. Door prizes include a Blu Ray DVD player and an MP3 player. There will also be silent and live auctions for a wide range of fly fishing gear, trips and many other items. Admission to the evening banquet is $20 for adults and $6.50 for children. All are welcome.
