Downtown Gelato Grand Opening Celebration Set for May 18
MONTROSE – Just as the temperatures begin to climb in Montrose, A+Y Design Gallery owners Yesenia and Adam Duncan now have 22 new reasons to visit their Main Street gallery, as they are now proprietors of locally-sourced gelato.
After a soft opening on Saturday, May 11, and a grand opening celebration planned for Saturday, May 18, the two believe serving the frozen Italian treat is a good fit for both the gallery and Main Street Montrose.
“Gelato is something Montrose doesn’t have,” Adam says. “It’s a good fit for us.”
Inside A+Y Design Gallery, you’ll find an impressive display of Adam’s unique handcrafted wood furniture as well as a spectrum of art designed by local artists. Now, in the center of it all, stands a giant gelato display case the two imported from Italy.
“We hope it will increase the walking traffic into the gallery,” Yesenia says. “A lot of people walk in and don’t realize we have four rooms. Now, people can get a cup of gelato, hang out and check out everything we have.”
Inside the shiny new case are 22 flavors of gelato made in Grand Junction by Gelato Junction. Gelato Junction first opened its doors on Main Street in Grand Junction back in 2008 and has its own gelato recipe that highlights locally produced ingredients from in and around the Grand Valley.
It’s because Gelato Junction creates local flavors with local ingredients that Adam and Yesenia believe it’s a good fit for Main Street Montrose as well.
“They use local produce, there’s no high fructose corn syrup, it’s gluten free and it’s better for you than ice cream,” Yesenia says. “We have 22 flavors right now, ranging from pistachio to chocolate chip to Coyote Chocolate, made with chocolate and cayenne pepper.”
The two said they plan to expand the gelato side of the business over the next six months by offering other gelato-related specialties such as waffle cones and bowls. For now, they aim to keep it simple. They’ve added two sidewalk tables and an awning, under which people can relax and enjoy their gelato. They also have free wireless internet available, and hope the new business will bring even more foot traffic to downtown Montrose.
“We want people to have an experience that’s more than just an art gallery,” Yesenia says. “It’s fun and different.”
Downtown Gelato at A+Y, located at 513 E. Main Street in Montrose, is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Saturday’s grand opening celebration will include a ribbon cutting and an auction of the first cup of gelato to benefit the Valley Food Partnership’s school garden programs.
