OURAY COUNTY – County residents who sign up for citizen memberships with the Ouray Chamber Resort Association can get a “substantial” discount on their propane deliveries from either AmeriGas or Ferrellgas.

According to Chamber executive director Jennifer Loshaw, a $45 citizen membership will get customers a rate of approximately $1.79/gallon versus the current standard rate of $2.50/gallon. Rates fluctuate, but according to Loshaw, “the two companies are being very competitive with each other. Neither one wants to have the higher rates. The member rate is guaranteed to be lower than the standard rate.”

Members sign a contract saying they will stay with the supplier for a year, and that they will buy “in the neighborhood” of 1,000 gallons per year.

The program has been in place “since before I came here three years ago,” said Loshaw. “We used to do it with Hometown Propane. But now AmeriGas has bought Hometown, and we have contracts with them and with Ferrellgas.”

Citizen memberships to the Chamber support the Visitor Center in Ouray, which has seen a record 29,000 visitors so far this year, according to Loshaw. The number of citizen memberships is down, however, to 12 from about 30. Loshaw attributes that to the arrival of natural gas to the county in the last couple of years.
