Placerville Resident Running for District 3 Commissioner Seat

SAN MIGUEL COUNTY – Longtime Placerville resident Kevin Kell believes the current San Miguel Board of County Commissioners lacks “real world business experience” to promote small business growth in the county. That’s one of the main issues that has driven him to run for the District 3 commissioner seat in November.

Kell, a registered Republican, will face incumbent Green Party candidate Art Goodtimes and Democratic Party candidate Dan Chancellor in the election.

As the economy continues to struggle both locally and nationally, Kell believes the current commissioners have spent too much time focusing on the environment and not enough time promoting economic development.

“The current board’s focus has been myopically on the natural environment of San Miguel County, which is appropriate to an extent but they have totally ignored the economics of the county,” Kell said in an interview on Tuesday. “We have the natural environment, the social environment and the economic environment. Those are the three support legs of our quality of life here. I don't think anyone can say the economic environment has been great here and we need someone on the board that has real world business experience to ask the right questions to promote the right small businesses here.”

Kell said he has the “real world business experience” to promote economic development in the county. He has a degree in business administration and has over 30 years of experience in the banking and insurance industries. Kell and his wife, Cherrie, and their three boys, moved to San Miguel County in 1993 and have lived in Placerville for the past 12 years. With his wife, Kell operates CoWest Insurance in Telluride.

While the economic environment hasn’t been great across the nation, Kell believes the San Miguel County government has sat on its hands and waited for things to get better. The bottom line, he said, is the county doesn't have an economic development plan.

“What I don't see is anyone as a champion of the economy. That’s where the current board of commissioners have fallen down on the job,” Kell said. “There are a lot of small business’s that would like to see a little economic growth right about now. Montrose has an economic development council. We don’t even have one person, let alone an entire organization.”

And although Kell said he’s heard that a Republican can’t win in San Miguel County, he doesn’t see this election as a Right versus Left issue.

“The way I look at it, I am running as a business man,” he said. “Put a ‘B’ behind my name. It’s about what we are going to do to make people’s lives better tomorrow than they were today. It’s great that we have protected our environment but when you ignore the economic environment you do it at the peril of the economic and social environment.”
