SILVERTON – Silverton Mountain is offering half price season passes for its unguided season to Western Slope locals beginning August 23.

For a limited time and up to a “predetermined” number of passes sold, according to Silverton Mountain’s press release, passes for locals will go for $399, down from the regular price of $799.

The pass deal comes with half-price (standby) heli-drops and 14 free days of skiing at other Colorado resorts: four days at A-Basin, and five each at Monarch and Loveland.

The early-bird pass also gets pass holders $79 tickets (standby) during the area’s guided season.

Silverton has also increased its lift capacity for 2010-11. By adding more chairs to the cable of its one chairlift, the area hopes to reduce lift lines. “You may likely even get a few extra runs in as a result,” according to the release.

Single-day, unguided lift tickets remain the same at $49.

Gus Kenworthy Places Second in Slopestyle at Junior World Championships

SNOW PARK, New Zealand – In a day of U.S. dominance, Telluride’s Gus Kenworthy took a second-place finish in slopestyle at the 2010 Junior World Championships held in New Zealand on Monday.

Kenworthy took second behind teammate Bobby Brown of Englewood, Colo.

According to a U.S. Ski Association news release, Kenworthy was a last minute substitute for the U.S. but made the most of his entry with his stellar run that consisted of a 270 onto a flat rail with a pretzel 270 out onto a cork nine nose on the first jump to a switch right cork seven lead tail on the second jump to a switch 10 tail grab on the third, ending with a switch 270 on and 450 off the cannon box. Kenworthy’s slopestyle run landed him in second place.

“The whole atmosphere is pretty laid back and fun,” Kenworthy said. “They were running everyone really quickly, which was awesome and the judges were really on point with getting the scores up quickly. It was pretty much perfect, couldn't really ask for more.”

Monday’s event marked the conclusion of the combined 2010 Snowboard and Freestyle Junior World Championships, having completed events in both disciplines. The freestyle contests will pick back up on Saturday, Aug. 28 at Cardrona resort in New Zealand.
